Nothing can bring you down as you drive off the lot in your new car. As soon as you arrive at home and stack your paperwork on the counter, you are hit with the truth: You’ve got lots to do for this new purchase.
First, congratulate yourself. Buying a new car is an exciting decision and a large commitment. If you want to stand outside admiring your car for an hour, now is the acceptable time.
Now it is time to get to work. Here are some basic steps you’ll take after you buy a new car.
Get Auto Insurance
You may be required to provide proof of insurance at the dealership before you close the sale. You may also secure car insurance at the dealership. You might need to communicate with your current insurance agent to change plans and make them aware of your purchase.
Register the Car
You can register your car with proof of insurance. You cannot simply put old license plates on your new car, but you may purchase or transfer existing plates when you register your vehicle at the DMV. The dealer will give you temporary tags until you have registered your vehicle.
Read the Owner’s Manual
The most important part of this step is that you understand the owner’s manual. Flipping through the radio section is not enough. Read through the manual and take time to understand the way your new car functions, as there might be major differences between your old and new vehicles.
Start a Maintenance Record
Your car might have a simple maintenance journal or workbook, but you can use whatever form is easiest for you. Write down mileage, dates of oil changes and check ups, and use this consistently. This will make it easier to keep you car in the best condition for years to come.
